Bill Mory, PGA Professional

billheadshotAfter spending 13 years as the Head Professional and Director of Golf at Walnut Hills Country Club in East Lansing, MI, my wife Karen and I purchased Meridian Sun Golf Club in Haslett, MI (formerly Pine Lake Golf Course) in February 2000. I grew up at a course much like Meridian Sun and taught myself to play with tips from my father and an old time golf pro by the name of Joe Nadolney. Shagging golf balls and playing as many as 54 holes in a day at High Cliff Golf Course in Wisconsin I learned that golf is about getting the ball into the hole in the fewest number of strokes. It wasn't about having the perfect swing, but rather about having fun and hitting as many good shots as I could muster.

During 36 years as a PGA Professional, I have taught both male and female golfers at every skill level from beginner to professional and every age from 2 to 96. My teaching and coaching philosophy and methods are simple and have been developed through years of study and experience in coaching my various students as well as from playing competitively throughout my life in high school, college and professional events such as the 2012 United States Senior Open, the PGA Tour's Buick Open and the Ben Hogan Tour (currently the Web.com tour).

I enjoy sharing my knowledge of the game and hope that it will not only help you to improve your game, but also enjoy it to the fullest. Golf is a game that is played and enjoyed for some many reasons including the beauty of the course landscape, recreation and socializing with friends and family, exercise, travel, competition with self and others and the challenge of hitting that perfect shot or improving on your best score. Yes, it has it's frustrating moments, but we should be thankful for those for without them, we could not enjoy the victories regardless of how big or small.

Many of my youth students have gone on to successful high school, college and professional careers, but what I find most rewarding is to see my students playing more golf and enjoying it at a higher level with their family and friends. My passion for junior golf and coaching kids is demonstrated in our terrific youth golf program at Meridian Sun Golf Club and in having served as both the Girls and Boys Golf Coach at Haslett High School for nine years. To learn more about our junior golf program and my philosophy on coaching youth player, please click here.

The game of golf has been a wonderful blessing my life and if the information I share can encourage you and others to play more golf and have more fun experiencing the many wonderful aspects of this game, I am humbled.

Stephanie Wagemann, Teaching Professional

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:

Every person is unique physically, mentally and emotionally and therefore you can never teach two people the exact same swing, and you cannot teach two different people in the same way. I understand that there is greatness within each student, my job as their teacher or coach is to help them realize this greatness, and help remove any barriers that are getting between them and their full potential. I commit to helping the student become AWARE of what they are doing within their golf swing. Learning can only come through self-awareness. I will also focus on teaching the student what the club needs to be doing to get the desired results- since the club is what they use to hit the ball. As opposed to what they are doing with their body, because those feelings will be different for every player. I will focus on what to do and have the student DISCOVER how to do it.

SWING PHILOSOPHY:
No two golf swings will be the same. That being said, I believe that the most important thing for a golfer to learn is how the club face and the golf ball connect at the point of impact. It is also important for each individual golfer to develop a swing that is efficient for them, and that they are capable of repeating consistently from one swing to the next and that is similar from one club to another. The ultimate goal of the golf swing being to make the ball go to a chosen target, for a specified distance, through control of the club-face, by taking a proper set-up and swinging the club with the arms and rotation of the core-back and forward to a proper finish position.

Whether you want to learn to play golf or just want to fix your slice, you've found the most positive and progressive golf instruction in the Lansing, Michigan area.  If you're a longtime golfer seeking further improvement or a beginner looking for basic instruction on how to get started, the golf professionals at Meridian Sun Golf Club can help you learn the skills that will make your golf more enjoyable. Offering private lessons, group clinics and junior golf programs, Meridian Sun provides a variety of learning environments to suit everyone.

Junior Golf:  Each summer Meridian Sun welcomes over 150 junior golfers to the club for fun filled clinics and leagues. Starting as early as age 3, our junior golfers receive group instruction on the fundamentals and etiquette of golf.

Our Learning Center has a natural turf practice range that can handle 15 players at a time, a 4,000 square-foot practice putting green and short game practice area. The unique short game area has a 10,000 square foot practice green, a dedicated teeing area and two practice bunkers.

Headed up by PGA professional and golf coach, Bill Mory, the Learning Center features lessons and clinics for players of all ages and abilities. From our popular junior golf programs to a variety of adult classes, we offer both instructional and playing opportunities.

Our Philosophy:

Golf is truly the game of a lifetime, and we want you to enjoy every minute of it.

Bill has a wealth of teaching and coaching experience. He respects the challenges of the game, but believes in taking a simple approach with students. Like everything we learn in life, golf must be learned one-step at a time. So our learning programs are progressive in nature, building on each golfer's unique talents in an effort to achieve his or her goals. Golf can only be enjoyed fully if your play matches or exceeds your expectations. Our responsibility and promise is to take you to your goal.

At the center, every student receives the personal and professional attention he or she needs and deserves.

In private lessons or at group clinics or workshops, each student's abilities are assessed and a customized learning program is developed. Our instructors recommend plans for conditioning, pre-swing and in-swing fundamentals, drills, practice schedules, course management and game strategy.

Among the many options that we offer are:

  • Short game workshops
  • Couples clinics.
  • Parent-child clinics.
  • Women's learn-to-golf classes and Couples Clincs.
  • Instruction for adults and children.
  • Junior golf camp and daily golf activities for children during the summer.

Welcome to award winning Junior Golf at Meridian Sun Golf Club.  We believe that the future of golf is our youth, therefore we are excited to offer a wide variety of memberships and programs for current and future junior golfers in our community. Golf can only be learned by playing it and we strive to get our juniors on the course as often as possible. Many courses frown on getting kids on the course and offer programs only on the range or practice areas. Playing is an integral part of every one of our programs including the clinics for our youngest participants (ages 3-4).

We also encourage parents and grandparents to get their children on the course and give them the real golf experience as early as possible with proper safety precautions. Safety and etiquette are also a key component to our junior golf programs. We want every child to have fun learning in a safely supervised environment where they are taught to respect the game, their coaches, fellow golfers and last but not least, the golf course facility and staff. A comprehensive list of our summer programs are listed below. We also have full membership programs the provide unlimited golf all summer in our membership area.
